One Way or Two Way Communication

Remember the exercise we did today in class about one way or two way communication?  Have a discussion or comment on the following question:

1. When do media claim to offer two-way communication yet only offer a few more one way choices?

  2. They do this when they are trying to offer you something that you can use with other people. They say things like come and play with us, etc.

  3. One time when I was going to watch a movie, there was a commercial at the beginning about Kung Fu Panda. Po came up really close to the screen and started a staring contest with the audience and says, "Oh . . . You're good". The commercial is trying to make two-way communication with the audience but to us, it is a one-way communication because we can't reply back. I even blinked a lot during that time and nothing happened.

  4. Like in movie commercials, brand commercials they say things such as "your good why don't you come train with" in the movie Transporter etc. that is when two way communication is trying to happen when it is really one way

  5. Excellent answers! Don't forget to read other people's replies and respond to them too. Well done!

  6. What about when people write in letters to respond to newspaper articles as "letters to the editor". If the editor of the newspaper chooses which letters to publish in the paper, is that still two way communication?

    1. Usually it is not something you can use to communicate to other people - it is them trying to sell you something that you will put either your money, or your opinion in agreeing with them, into.

  8. I think it's not right Amierul. Because they are not only just offering you ways to communicate with others. I think they do this when they try to persuade to do something like advertisement. They use advertisement for buying something.

  10. Movie commercials sometimes say: "Are you having fun watching normal TV?" or "How to enjoy the movie?"

In television advertisement, usually it say something like movie commercials.

  11. They do this when they are trying to sell us something or want us to do something. For example, tv commercials. A company who wants to sell their stuffs, they do marketing in many ways. Sometimes they choose a famous celebrity- (someone most people will like)come out in tv commercials to show us they are using that thing and sometimes says "this is really useful, you should try, come and join us!) So people who are a big fan of that celebrity might buy it. More examples are found in billboards, magazines, internet and messages (tells us what items are on sale), etc..

    1. I agree with this because they try and tell us that a famous person or our idols use this so it must be good enough for them (a famous person to use). But also they tell us that we can share or prove something to everyone but actually we don't really have a say in any of it, they get to decide everything.

    2. Good point Indah. They do decide what you should want but do you think you have the choice whether you will fall for their tricks and buy what they are telling you that you need?

  12. Two way communication is usually used to project the thought that the advertiser has made the advertisement just for you.It is meant to make you feel special and important. That way you are brainwashed with the though that you can trust the product/company/commercial.The media uses two way communication in newspapers and commercial and billboards all the time.A very common way to sell a product is two way communication. It is good because it makes the reader/customer feel like they are the boss. You can make them feel that way by asking them a question.Like "so what do you think?" or "don't you just want to try it!".

    1. That's exactly right namitha. The media performs as though they are listening to your needs and have created a product to solve all of your problems. Have you ever been tricked into wanting something that has been advertised, then getting it (after begging your mum and dad) and then realizing your life is the same even if you have the product?

  13. I agree with Jun. The companies don't really care about their customers, they just want your money.

  14. People use lines that make it seem like they are talking to us so that we feel involved and sometimes to make you feel like they're not just advertising something but instead, they're inviting you to play with them. People who want your vote or support would also throw lines that would make you seem like a friend or buddy of their's so you feel like you're more than just a normal random person.

  15. That's an excellent point azim. Politicians always want you to feel as though they are talking to you, like Obama and his Twitter account. That's democracy. But if a million people go to the street and protest about debt and corruption or a war they dont want, and the government ignores them, is 'democracy' and voting one or two way communication?

  16. You can tell by the wordings on the picture how powerful the medias influence is on us. Our minds are caged and they are only letting us believe as much as they want us to. Once the media has a hold of you, they chain you up and plant words in your head for us to digest on. We are prisoners to the media. We have no say...we just follow.
