  2. We learned today the 6 media giants own 90% of what we read, watch and listen to. This is not a good thing because it will change the way it's supposed to be, if they are not good people in charge then they will send bad messages such as "women are silly". This message is not a good message. The 232 men in charge of 277 million people might be bad, disgusting or selfish.

    1. I agree with you Zigy because they do own a lot of other companies.

    2. Rhiannon, you have to give more information than that. What do you agree with? What surprised you about the website?

  3. It's very shocking to see how much money could be made from media business and in addition, the revenue came from six companies only. I never imagined that all TV channels I watch owned by 6 media giants and only 1 media executive handles 850,000 subscribers.

  5. Those people are very awesome because they have the ability to control all the small companies and make it into one big company.

  6. Great answers so far! Now think about if the 1 media executive who handles so many subscribers is a white man who doesn't like Christians or Muslims. What kind of message will he put out to all of his media companies to tell the people?

  7. He will put message that Christians or Muslims are bad people, they are so stupid, etc. To his media that he owns. And people who are Muslims and Christians may don't watch his program and his program may have very less viewers because Christianity and Islam are 1st and 2nd religion about how many people believe.

    1. But if he controls everything that people watch and read (and people love to watch and read things) then they will have to watch it. But it may cause a lot of happiness. Or even wars. Do you know anything about 9-11 or the War in Iraq? Afghanistan? Syria?

    2. I heard that there are many mines in Afghanistan (especially king's palace, there are more than 2000 mines in there)

  8. I learned that 90% of what we read, watch and listen to are controlled by 6 media giants. GE, News Corp, Disney, Viacom, Time Warner and CBS. In 1983 90% of America was owned by 50 companies. And in 2011 the same 90% were controlled by 6 companies. This decreases of companies really shocks me.What this means was that back in the days, companies were independent individual companies. They projected what they believed and they stood alone in the media. Because of money and power, companies have now stacked them self on top of each other causing a pyramid of most powerful to least. The ones at the top are the companies that control the most, make the most money, and have more say and popularity. The fact that 1 media executive controls 850,000 viewers/subscribers scares me. Its like depending on a total stranger who has different believes and interests than you, to control your news and entertainment.Though the ratio of media executive to customer seems impossible, America still managed to earn $ 275.9 billion in 2012.

    1. Extremely insightful post here Nami and a great and scarey comparison with a total stranger controlling what you see and possibly, what you believe, or how you feel about yourself or your place in the world. Imagine if one of those companies had shares (owned part) in a cigarette or an oil company - how would it effect how cigarettes are advertised or talked about? Oil spills?

  9. A very negative thing about having such little people handle such a big amount of people is that if one of those executives that handles a whopping 850,000 subscribers messes up (I mean who is to say that every single one of these executives are smart and of course everyone messes up), it would effect all of those he handles.

    1. Very good point Azim. What if one of those executives believed that Muslims were scarey people - what kind of message would he put out into the world via the media that he owns about Muslim people? Do you think this has ever happened?

  10. A surprising thing I learnt was that Clear Channel, a radio station, owned 1,200 stations in 1995 even though the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) forbade companies to own more than 40 stations. Also, In Minot, North Dakota, Clear Channel owns EVERY station.

    1. Yes Sherina, it is a very surprising thing. Why do you think it's a bit shocking that one company owns all of the radio stations? What are the risks for the town of Minot?

    2. Maybe Clear Channel is biased but the town of Minot will still believe in them.

  11. It made me shock seriously. There are more than 20o TV channels (average), and there are actually only 6 giant medias that controls the channels!

  12. Only 232 people decide what should be shown on all media which is a big problem. If they're all very mean men they can say bad stuff about anything they want without anyone knowing it and get away with it. 277 million americans are being controlled by these people about what they watch and listen to the radio on. The media is also owned by 6 big companies, GE, News Corp, Disney, Viacom, Time Warner and CBS. In 1983 the media in america 90% was owned by 50 companies. That much has changed since then!

    1. It has definitely changed a lot very quickly - the companies are getting bigger and bigger. Why do you think it is important that we understand who owns and controls the media?

    2. So that we know that we can chose for ourselves of what we really need in our lives.

  13. I can't believe that within 28 years all of the 50 media companies got shrunken to only 6 giant medias and those 6 giant medias own all the smaller media companies.I also can't believe that they made so much money just in one year! $275.9 billion!

  14. It's shocking that the top newspapers of 3 continents are owned by one company, News Corp.

  15. Okay.... In 1983 90% of American media was owned by 50 companies, Now!..... The same 90% is owned by 6, YES!, 6 media companies! Imagine the kind of power in one person! How much power in much person! Imagine what you could do with that kind of power?

    1. What could you do with that kind of power Jess? It sounds like a new episode of Iron Man could be brewing! But keep thinking with this thought...what could they do with that much power? What if they also own a construction company which makes money when countries are destroyed in war? They go to places like Iraq and rebuild it for billions of dollars in profit. What kind of message would they be sending in the media they own about war if they make money when war is happening?
